Our instructors undergo a process of continuous study and training; reflecting the idea that martial arts is a lifelong investment for enhancement, general health and well being; rather than a supplementary added fitness program.

It is a necessary obligation and duty to undertake continuous study for as long as one remains an instructor. Life's journey of learning and exploration cannot be stopped; if so; then advancement of skill is stopped.

Head, Senior and Junior Instructors history in our center date back to well over 30yrs, 22yrs, 13yrs, 2yrs, etc. of training respectively, allowing the concept of traditional training as not just a muttering of words but that of fact.

Every instructor must undergo training in First Aid Level 3, Tui-Na & Bone Setting, Qi Gong & Meditation. They also have the opportunity to be trained and graded in China & Taiwan to enhance their level of expertise and skill; making them internationally accredited; thus raising standards in South Africa.

Disclaimer-We cannot be held liable for any misrepresentation by individuals who lay claim to have trained or say they are authorized to train by our organization and any of its Head instructors;i.e. Dr./Shirfu Jeff Lan or his teachers Shirgung's Liang Dong Sheng & Feng Chao-Lin.

SHANU VAN DER BERG Since 2004 - Jnr. Taiji Branch instructor

I first started Taiji Quan with another centre in 1997, but had to resign after a couple of years due to my study schedule at the time. In early 2004 I met Shirjie Mags, and when I heard that she ran a KLWC Taiji branch in my area, I joined up straight away.

I started going for regular acupuncture sessions (Shirfu/Dr. Jeff Lan) early in 2006, and joined the Qigong classes with Shirxiong Jeronimo in October 2006. The acupuncture’s results were so profound, that I have since signed up for the Integrated Ancient Chinese Healing Arts course, which I am thoroughly enjoying, and have also attended a couple of Shirmo’s Yuan Qi workshops, which were great.

To say that all this has been a life-changing experience for me, would be the understatement of the century! When I joined the centre, I had bad knees, anemia, chronic glandular fever, high stress levels, and had been battling severe insomnia since childhood. Now my knees are fixed (without surgery!), my glandular fever seems to be under control, my energy levels are at an all time high, I am sleeping at night, and I have learnt that I can choose not to feel stressed about things. Aside from this, I am stronger physically and emotionally.

As an instructor, I hope that I can share some of the immense benefits I have experienced through Taiji so far, with my students. Instructing will also give me the chance to give a little bit back to the Centre, which continues to give so much to me. I have no doubt that instructing will also help me a great deal in my own Taiji practice, and life in general!

My sincere gratitude to Shirfu, Shirmo and my instructors for continuing to guide me through this process. I cannot imagine how I ever survived without Taiji and Qigong!

www.moonshadow.co.za is another passion which drives me.

AAFKE LOUW Since 2004 - Jnr. Taiji Branch instructor

End 2004 Joined Kim Loong Wushu Centre, Somerset West branch

Taiji Feb 2006 Joined Main Branch, Cape Town

Taiji & Qi Gong Sept 2006 Instructing Taiji in Somerset West

I have been a student of Shirfu Jeff Lan since the end of 2004, when I went for acupuncture for a balancing. The effect on me was so profound that I started Taiji at the Somerset West branch with Shirdi Johan de Goede as my instructor.

When Shirdi Johan emigrated to Australia at the beginning of 2006, I joined the main branch, continuing my Taiji training and starting Qi Gong. Chinese martial arts and medicine has had a huge impact on my life - simple, subtle, and profound. I was taught: "If you don't get it in the body, you don't get it at all". I understood the concept with my head, but am only now beginning to have a real bodily understanding of it. With improving my physical balance, my emotional balance is improving. With becoming more aware of being centrally grounded, I am spending less time with my head in the clouds and am more aware of the world around me. My eating habits have changed. Slowly my addictions are giving me up. My bone density has improved and the cortisone medication that I am on has been reduced to a minimum. This has exceeded the doctor's expectations, and I am working towards reducing it further. I am excited and privileged to be able now to teach beginners Taiji to others.

Uwe Gutschow Since 2003 - I.A.C.H.A. Lecturer

I joined IKLWC in 2003 (i think) to learn Taiji. It's something I always felt I needed to do. Shortly after joining, I started Qi Gong and then went on to learn Chinese medicine and eventually teach it.

It has been an absolute honour to learn from Shirfu & Shirmo and to be a student at the centre. My destiny in this world and the next is becoming clearer to me through continual hard work and dedication.

I am humbled every day and have immense gratitude for his teachings as well for the learnings I share with my Kung Fu brothers and sisters.

For me, this is a lifelong journey.

Jeronimo De Los Rios Since 2002 – I.A.C.H.A. Lecturer, Jnr. Instructor Yong Chun Quan & Assistant Jnr. Qi Gong Instructor

Country of Origin: Colombia.

It was meant for me to join Kim Loong Wushu centre and experience myself through the practice of Internal and external ways of Chinese martial arts (Yong Quan, Tai chi, Qi gong, tui-na and bonesetting).

Developing my mind and strengthen my health are just manifestations of the benefits of constant practice of the ancient kung fu systems with true lineage guidance.

Actually I am a (I.A.C.H.A) practitioner here at the centre and work under the supervision of Shirfu Jeff Lan.

WILLIAM LOUW Since 2001 - Jnr. Shaolin Branch instructor

I started training in August 2001 when my friend, Martin Cronje, asked me if I was interest in Kung Fu. Originally I wanted to get fit again and could not stand doing mindless exercise at the gym. I also wanted to learn more about my body and how it functioned; as well as how to control my co-ordination and movements.

I never actually considered becoming an instructor, until our branch instructor could no longer maintain his training and ours in Somerset West. It was then that I realized that Kung Fu had become apart of my life. Shirfu asked Martin and me if we would be willing to come to the headquarters to train and instruct in Somerset West.

I have learnt that being an instructor is not just showing or telling someone what should be done; it is more like guiding by example and having patience. You also learn to watch people; try and read them so that you can see if they are pushing themselves, where and why they are having problems with certain movements or actions. You also learn to feel how your body moves so that you can assist the beginners as to what they should be feeling or doing to perform the action correctly.

Being an instructor also makes you very aware of your own ability as the students copy you, making your errors become visible.

SIMONA MANZI-ISHAM - Since 2000 - Jnr. Taiji Branch instructor

Joined the center in 2000 - Study Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Tuina under Shirfu

It was pure luck that I started Tai Chi, but one can quickly get hooked It is a great honor to be able to teach and share this beautiful art. I started to instruct in 2003. Teaching helps to me stay focused and does not allow one to drop the standard of your training. It keeps the ego down and as a teacher allows one to learn from the students.

WAYNE LAUBSER - Since 2000

I have specialized in Taiji Quan and am currently a Tai Chi instructor. Have also studied Yong Chun Quan for a 1 ˝ years, but stopped to focus on my Tai Chi. I am also a member of the Lion & Dragon Dance Team and help out with the exhibition team when needed.

So far I have learned, sometimes the hard way, that Tai Chi is an evolution. There is no real beginning and definitely no end, just a path that you strive to stay on. I started doing Tai Chi as a favor to add to the numbers for a new beginner's class. I soon found that I enjoyed and benefited from my training. I became a junior instructor in 2003. I suppose the reason for me becoming an instructor is purely dedication and hard work, though there can clearly never be enough of either. Being an instructor is very beneficial to my training. I find that in order to understand, help and guide other students, I have to strive to understand the concepts to there full extent. The fake it till you make it approach does not work, because in the end your students do not benefit and your own training will deteriorate due to bad habits.

AVAAN GOVINDASAMMY Since 1999 - Jnr. Shaolin Branch instructor

I started training in Shaolin Quan when I was nine and am still training today under Shirfu. When I first joined it was all about self-defense but as time goes by you begin to learn that Kung Fu is so much more. It teaches you more about what the possibilities of body and mind. As you continue you may not be the greatest fighter or martial artist but you learn more about the rich culture and tradition of Kung Fu. All students who join and are already members feel they gave gained a piece of the wide variety of martial arts whether it is in Shaolin Quan,Yong Chun, Tai Chi Quan, Chi Kung or medicine. Today I still continue to learn more from my teacher, senior students and junior students because a person can never ever know enough. My favourite aspect of Shaolin Quan is Wushu because of all the extraordinary and powerful moves.

DEREK DOUGLAS RAATS - Since 1994 - Snr. Shaolin Branch instructor

I started training @ K.L.W.C in 1994 and have been involved in various Martial Arts Since 1984. Why did you join? My interest in Martial arts started long ago and i was exposed to various styles of teaching and training until I walked into the K.L.W.C and found the traditional way, or it found me. i knew then that i was at the right school.I find that my training helps me in various aspects of my life. Decision making, discipline, gives me drive and stamina, helps me focus on tasks at hand and i think most importantly allows me to express myself thru my Martial Arts.I started teaching beginning of 2003. I find that while training, a person is much focused and in that way can learn properly and train hard. When one is teaching I find you learn about your own self and capabilities as a martial artist.Being an instructor keeps me humble and focused. I also get to go back and focus on basics which are the foundation of any Martial Art.

I am honored to be a closed-door tohdei (understudy) at Kim Loong Wushu Centre and remain in training.

THEMBALTHU TYUTU Since 1994

I started training in Thursday 27 Oct 1994 at 06.30pm; I was 13 years old. I always wanted to train and practice Kung Fu but my mother wasn’t happy about it; she thought I would end up with broken bones. Since then I have never stopped training; I am part of the Lion, Dragon and Demonstration team; partaking in functions and Chinese ceremonies. I learnt lots of discipline, self defense and helps me to maintain a good healthy lifestyle. I have competed in lots of competitions and won many awards. I am a Senior Shaolin Quan & Lion dance instructor; the Kim Loong Wushu Centre is my second home. I cannot live without it and kung fu is a part of my life. .

"JOE" JONATHAN PAPPAS - Since 1993

Began as assistant instructor late 1995. I enjoy teaching as 'the student learns from the teacher and the teacher learns from the student.' It is always rewarding to watch students develop and improve over the years.

My special interests are weapons, Chin-Na and the various forms of Iron body Chi Kung. I also enjoy Lion Dancing and Dragon dancing as essential parts of the culture of Kung- Fu. I enjoy teaching Shaolin and the interaction between students and instructors; we both learn from each other.

As a natural progression from, and within my Shaolin training, I have included more Tai Chi and Qi Gong Training, although I still consider Shaolin my major style. As all the styles share common principles they tend to compliment each other.

HEDLEY MOSES Since 1992

I started studying Chinese martial arts in 1991. My first style was Lohan Quan, one year under Shirfu Avert Vink whose grandmaster was Shirgung Su Chin Miel. Been relocated I moved to Cape Town where I commenced my studies and still currently train under Shirfu Lan.

My styles are Northern Shaolin Quan, Yang (Chen Man Cheng) Tai Chi and Yong Chun Quan (Wing Chun). I am also studying Qi Gong. I also studied Hsing-I under Shirgung Lin Feng Chao for two years; and also a retired Lion and Dragon dancer.I have had exposure to Wushu, Sanda, Chin-na, Shuai Chao but are not my major. I am currently the Instructor for Yong Chun Quan.

I believe that it is important to study internal arts in conjunction to the external arts. I like Yong Chun due to it been focussed and a short style.

JEFFERSON G. KIM-LOONG LAN Since 1990
